Welcome! My name is Alexander Whiteside. I’m a Publishing Editor for the Royal Society of
Chemistry and a theoretical chemist by training. When I’m not coordinating the peer review and publication of
scientific papers, I contribute to Chemistry World magazine and assist in the
Royal Society of Chemistry’s outreach activities.
Selected Chemistry World stories:
- How the products of fire control the formation of snow (researcher profile)
- Ritonavir (podcast)
- Synthesis-searching software’s superior scoring sharpens selections
- Delocalisation pins down meaning of bond order
I obtained my PhD in 2012 under the supervision of Prof. Maciej Gutowski at Heriot-Watt University. (Thesis title: "Proton transfer, electron binding and electronegativity in ammonium-containing systems".) From 2012 to 2014 I investigated batteries at the University of Bath with Prof. M. Saiful Islam. From 2014 to 2016 I studied corrosion with Prof. Stephen J. Jenkins of the University of Cambridge.
Selected publications:
- Particle shapes and surface structures of olivine NaFePO4 in comparison to LiFePO4, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2014,16, 21788-21794
- Is Electronegativity a Useful Descriptor for the Pseudo-Alkali Metal NH4?, Chem. Eur. J., 2011, 17, 13197-13205.
